Wesley College – Chinese Cultural Workshop
18th November 2025
Kung Fu, which originated in China thousands of years ago, represents some of the richest aspects of Chinese culture. The virtues cultivated through its practice—patience, respect, determination, and dedication—remain highly relevant for young people navigating today’s fast-changing and unpredictable world.
On 18 November 2025, we were invited to participate in Cultural Day at Wesley College Waverley as part of the Languages and Culture curriculum. Alongside a Kung Fu demonstration and interactive workshop, students were introduced to key elements of Chinese culture, creating a meaningful and engaging learning experience.
Each session began with a dynamic stretching routine, followed by an introduction to the history of Kung Fu and influential figures such as Bruce Lee, who played a pivotal role in bringing Kung Fu to global prominence. Students were then taught basic Wing Chun techniques, including fundamental punches, while also exploring the mindset of a Kung Fu practitioner—resilient, disciplined, and persistent.
Sessions concluded with hands-on drills, where students applied their new skills using punching and kicking bags. In total, three sessions were delivered to Year 7, 8, and 9 students. All were well attended, and the instructors were impressed by the students’ enthusiasm and respect. Year 7 students were particularly eager and energetic, Year 8 students curious and engaged, and Year 9 students demonstrated notable maturity and focus.
The workshops were led by Giulius Canteri and Tina Hargitay, recent graduates of the Anne Pang Self Defence Instructors Course, who delivered the sessions with confidence and professionalism.

As Giulius reflected:
“On Tuesday 18 November 2025, Wesley College students participated in a Cultural Workshop with APSD. This brief experience was rich and accessible in language, culture, and wellbeing practices that have evolved over millennia. The students were enthusiastic, capable, and determined, with strong acknowledgement of their skill, effort, and attitude.”
The welcoming and appreciative nature of both students and staff made the experience especially enjoyable, with the three-hour sessions passing quickly. The instructors look forward to returning to this outstanding school to continue sharing knowledge, culture, and practical skills with such enthusiastic learners.
