Introduction

Anne Pang Self Defence is an empowerment-based form of self-defence that combines martial arts techniques with education on gender-based equality, boundary-setting and social issues, creating a holistic framework for personal empowerment.

History

The system was founded in 1990 by Dr. Anne Pang. It integrates effective techniques from a style of Chinese martial art originally developed by a woman in China a few hundred years ago, alongside modern self-awareness strategies and preventative measures advised by the Victorian Police as well as insights drawn from the experiences shared by her students over the years.

Two Lines of Self-Defence

The first line of self-defence is your mental situational awareness and psychological preparedness. By staying calm and replying on your instincts and common sense, you can often avoid or safely exit two out of three potentially dangerous situations without the need for physical confrontation.

The second line of self-defence is physical techniques that were designed by women for women. It should only be used as a last resort; however, when it becomes necessary, you must commit fully in order to create the opportunity to disengage and get away as quickly as possible.

Anne Pang Self Defence is a Not-for-Profit organisation and a Social Enterprise, often offering free services to support and empower disadvantaged women.

We support NFP community groups by providing voluntary services, particularly those dedicated to disadvantaged women and children.

Since arriving as a migrant in Australia in the 1907s – without a word of English during the White Australia Policy era, Anne Pang has developed a passion for supporting new migrants and refugees.

The Anne Pang Self Defence team of instructors is multilingual, speaking Chinese mandarin, Chinese Cantonese, Vietnamese, German and Greek.

We collaborate with many not-for-profit community groups to support and empower women – physically and mentally – helping them build confidence, pursue their goals, and integrate successfully into their new host country.

Community Groups

We have designed and delivered programs in collaboration with a diverse range of community groups representing different faiths, cultures, languages and ethnicities.

Over the past 30 odd years, it has been our honour to provide empowerment training to women of diverse backgrounds and to watch them grow and thrive, knowing that these skills and mindset help them become more independent and self-reliant, taking meaningful steps toward economic and mental autonomy and freedom.
It is essential that we work closely with community groups and remain culturally sensitive and appropriate to their needs. We communicate with the group leaders to understand the protocols and customs that must be respected and tailor our programs accordingly.

Gender-Based Classes:
Traditionally, these classes have been offered exclusively to females.

Workshop

These workshops provide an overview of the fundamentals in physical defence and mental strategies. They introduce participants to the practical options available when confronted with danger, while also debunking common myths and misconceptions about self-defence.

We can cater to small group of women at a time, allowing both clients and community organisers to train together. This approach often works very well, as having co-ordinators train with their clients helps fostering team spirit and morale.

If none of our instructors speaks group’s native language, we often rely on very simple language and physical demonstrations to communicate key points, and we may seek assistance from group members with more English proficiency to support translation.

To ensure the safety of our community, all Anne Pang Self Defence instructors for our workshops hold current Working with Children Checks.

Courses (Essential & Intermediate level)

A Course of 4 (Essential Level) or 7 to10 (Intermediate Level) classes

The longer the training duration and period, the more your body adapts to the techniques, making them more automatic. As a result, your learning progresses from cognitive to the associative stage; from thinking about the techniques to a more automatic stage.

Partner training will also be incorporated to improve your fitness, accuracy, timing and distance management as well as your ability to cope with fear – ultimately building your overall confidence.

The duration of these sessions can vary from one hour to two hours weekly or bi-weekly.

To ensure the safety of our community, all Anne Pang Self Defence instructors for our workshops hold current Working with Children Checks.

Learning Goal 1. Physical: Participants will learn essential and effective delf defence techniques through repetition, developing associative learning. They will proceed to apply these basics and engage in partner training. This enables the body to respond more automatically, often resulting in faster and more effective actions in complex, dynamic situations.

Learning Goal 2. Mental: Through guided discussion and storytelling, participants will develop a broader range of safety strategies for the home, public environment, interactions with known individuals and bystander intervention. They will also learn some de-escalation tactics while building confidence and strengthening their ability to trust their instincts.
